NULC invites leading Employers to its latest Open Event

On 12 March from 5:30-8:00pm, NULC will be hosting its latest open event for Year 11 pupils and their parents. Visitors are invited to speak to our dedicated staff about our huge range of A Levels, Vocational subjects and Apprenticeships.

At this event, visitors will have the opportunity to speak to a range of employers from a variety of employment sectors who will be on hand for advice and guidance in their areas, if you are interested in speaking to any of the employers at the event then please come along.

A Day in the Life of a Construction Worker

On 28 January 2015 Newcastle-under-Lyme College welcomed groups of pupils from 2 local schools to take part in a series of construction tasters. Year 10 & 11 pupils from Madeley High School and Chesterton Community Sports College (CCSC) enjoyed sessions in Bricklaying, Painting & Decorating, Joinery and Electrical Installation.

In the Electrical session, pupils were given a set of instructions to follow, showing them how to re-wire a plug. Pupils enjoyed the challenge of cutting the wires and re-wiring; something they had never done before. Year 11 CCSC pupil Jay commented; “The Electrical taster was very fun and I am going to apply for this course at college”.

When pupils began the Joinery taster, they were instructed on how to make their very own coat hook which they were able to take home with them. They were shown how to use various different tools which for many was the first time they had used them, for example; a smoothing plane, they then got stuck in with their creation. Tom from Madeley High School said; “I really enjoyed the joinery session, it was one of my favourite parts of the day”.

In Painting & Decorating pupils were encouraged to use different paints to colour plaster cast emblems with various pictures on, including some Dr. Who themed pictures! They were then set a task with a cutting exercise. This tested and improved pupil’s hand-eye co-ordination with a paint brush. All the pupils involved commented that this taster was very interesting and fun, with Madeley pupil; Tom, adding that he enjoyed the taster because he learned how to use the paint brush to create different effects with paint.

To finish the day all the pupils had the chance to experience life as a brick layer. They were shown how to correctly lay bricks to build a straight and stable wall and enjoyed getting a little messy. Benjamin, from Madeley, commented that although it was more hard work than he had expected, the taster was very interesting. Grace, also from Madeley, added ‘I thought the bricklaying was very good and I was able to learn a lot of interesting information in a short period of time”.

Mr. Edwards from Madeley High School enjoyed every session saying; “The day was brilliant, students were engaged and got a lot out of the experience”.

Maths Motivation at NULC’s Lego Innovation Studio

Clayton Hall Business and Language College Year 11 pupil’s enjoyed a morning of applying maths principles to build and programme  Lego Education ‘robots’ in the college’s brand new Lego Innovation Studio on Monday 26^th January with Lego Innovation Studio Manager, Andy Snape.

The session was designed to support Year 11 maths pupils as they approach their final GCSE exams. Nicky Smith, Head of Maths at Clayton Hall Business and Language College, said’ It was really enjoyable and a great way to both motivate those who do not generally enjoy maths but also an excellent way to extend and challenge the more able.’

Year 11 pupil Kyle Snape commented "I found this taster session to be very enjoyable. There wasn’t a moment during this session where I felt stuck."

The pupils showed excellent teamwork working in pairs and were set a number of challenges to complete in competition with their classmates.

College hosts ‘Magic of Marketing’ schools Event

NULC will be hosting a ‘Magic of Marketing’ schools event on Wednesday 28 January in support of local company KMF’s Young Engineer of the Year Project 2015.

Pupils will be attending from 17 local schools along with sponsors from 18 different local, national and international companies including Costa coffee, Michelin and Staffordshire University.

On the day Year 10 pupils will gain experience in key marketing principles including sales pitching, promotion and networking. This will help towards this year’s KMF Project where pupils are challenged to design, print and pitch a gadget which provides a business solution, using 3D laser printers to bring their gadgets to life.

Organiser Lucy Hancock, Schools Relationship Manager at NULC, said: “We are delighted to be supporting KMF’s Young Engineer of the Year Project again as it is a great way for pupils to work with employers and the College supports this with the use of our fantastic facilities.”

Employers will be on hand to help prepare the Young Engineer competitors for the semi-final on Thursday 12 March at Britannia Stadium before they advance to the final round with Jason Bradbury from the Gadget Show judging their entries in June.

Monologues, Dancing and Blood

On Tuesday 30 September, lecturers and students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College visited Year 9 pupils at The Co-Operative Academy of Stoke-on-Trent for their Deep Learning Day. Tina McDonald, Performing Arts Centre Manager and Rachel Whitaker, Course Team Leader for Level 3 Make up Artistry, ran workshops in ‘Performing Arts Auditions’ and ‘Theatrical Make-up’.

In the Performing Arts session NULC students Maddison and Sian performed a monologue to the pupils, who then learnt and performed the monologue in pairs. Pupils learned all about the importance of confidence in an audition and some went on to volunteer to perform to the whole group. They were then taught some basic dance moves where they learnt to control their balance during a number of spins and how to impress within the performing arts industry.

In the Theatrical Make-up session, NULC students gave demonstrations on how to apply casualty make-up. The pupils gained good practice for their Halloween costumes using Grimas stage blood and moulding wax to create realistic cuts to their hands. LEGO Innovation Studio at NULC

 

 

There is something different happening at NULC. In our mission to be ‘The College of first choice’ we are investing in a new and innovative way to enhance and enrich our curriculum; with LEGO.

 

We will become the first education provider within the region to boast a LEGO Innovation Studio that is purposely equipped with LEGO Education resources. There is a wide variety of resources available that are suitable for all levels of learners. All curriculum areas within the college have made a commitment to integrating them wherever possible.

 

The main focus of the resources are courses which base themselves upon the STEM curriculum. Students studying courses involving Maths, Science, Engineering and Computer Science will all see the immediate affinity with the robotics whilst all other students will be accommodated with the literacy resources available.

 

The LEGO Innovation Studio will not only provide our current students with opportunities through the curriculum and extra-curricular clubs but will also offer tasters and workshops for our future students through the Schools Liaison Team. We aim to run subject specific tasters that both secondary schools and primary schools can access giving schools the opportunities to experience the studio first-hand.

 

Once you are a student here you will given the opportunity to spend parts of your curriculum time using the facility and the resources to get involved using LEGO kits to enhance your learning experience. You will also be able to join in the extra-curricular robotics club!

Former NULC student gives inspirational talk

On Monday 29^th September, former Newcastle-under-Lyme College student, Lance Corporal Thomas Capper, visited Year 11 pupils at Trentham High School.

Thomas gave an inspirational talk about how hard work and determination have enabled him to follow his dream of becoming a paramedic. Despite failing to gain a place at University due to his low confidence, he joined the British Army in 2012. In 2014 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and has never looked back.

Having visited a number of barracks across Britain, he completed a course on sky-diving, joined a tour of Kenya and completed the pre-deployment training used for Afghanistan. At the end of September Thomas is off to Canada for 2 months to drive an ambulance and offer medical support for an army training exercise.

Pupils from Trentham High School were given the chance to ask Thomas about life in the army but also about the BTEC National Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science that he completed at NULC.
