Getting fit for Basketball with Wolstanton High School

On Wednesday 9 May 2012, 25 Year 10 students from Wolstanton High School took part in a day long sports taster at Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC).  The day included a fitness testing lecture where students took their blood pressure and worked out their fitness levels.

The high school pupils also had the chance to meet current members of the award-winning NULCAcademy of Sport and took part in a special Q&A session to ask about college life and the different sports they play.

The afternoon session was dedicated to basketball with former NBA star and NULC Basketball coach Shawn Jamison taking the enthusiastic pupils through the fundamental skills of the sport.  The students were able to put their new skills to the test by playing short games alongside current NULC basketball students.

Gareth Hughes, School Liaison Officer said: "The pupils from Wolstanton High School thoroughly enjoyed the session.  They were delighted to learn the fundamental skills of basketball from someone of Shawn's experience."

This was first time that this session was run with Wolstanton High School and the hope now is to further expand the sessions to other schools.
